Veronica Ibarra (b. 1973, Madrid)
Veronica Ibarra is a filmmaker whose work delves into themes of alienation, fractured identity, and the quiet ache of longing. Through emotionally charged narratives with philosophical depth, she explores the tension between isolation and fleeting moments of connection.
A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art in London, her creative path began at the crossroads of visual art, animation, and experimental film, but her profound love for narrative cinema — including the emotional elegance of Japanese arthouse cinema — led her to develop her own quiet, introspective storytelling voice.
Currently dividing her time between Tokyo and Madrid, Veronica is drawn to Japan not only as a place of creative inspiration, but as the only space where her cinematic universe can fully exist — a place where she seeks to adapt, belong, and create deeply emotional narratives, with Tokyo as a mysterious setting filtered through her own inner world.
Her previous films, including The Uncertain Existence, Anatidae, and Night Damage, have screened at venues such as La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Laboral Centro de Arte (Gijón), Espacio Oculto (Madrid), HOME (Manchester), and the Underwire Film Festival (London).
